Winemaker Notes

Marques de Murrieta Reserva Rioja is the wine that best expresses our style, combining plots, varieties, training methods, soils, aspects, and attitudes of our Finca Ygay. They aim insistently at freshness and elegance, keeping the foundations of our style: Mediterranean character, American oak, finesse and balance, fruit and structure.

Critical Acclaim

JS 95/100
James Suckling
Terrific aromas of currants, berries, cinnamon and perfume. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a dense palate. Superb length and refinement. Compact. Super length. Superb quality considering the price. More delicate and refined than the 2010. Precise.

RP 92/100
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The blend of the 2012 Rioja Reserva is significantly different from previous vintages, with more Graciano and Garnacha. The blend was approximately 77% Tempranillo, 10% Garnacha, 8% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo. After a very dry growing season, the harvest was saved by some rains at the end of September, which allowed the grapes to reach perfect ripeness. The wine also had a slightly longer upbringing, 23 months in American oak barrels and at least nine of those months were in new oak barrels. However, it seems like the oak is better integrated than in the 2011, and the fruit is fresher. The palate has one extra point in depth, with very fine tannins and especially good freshness that gives it a sense of great harmony.

Marqués de Murrieta breaks its own records of international growth

2017 has been a fantastic year for Marqués de Murrieta internationally. In addition to expanding into new markets in different continents, reaching agreements with distributors in Italy, Kazakhstan, Portugal, China, the Caribbean and Honduras where, there has been a sustained growth that we estimate will be around 15% at the year's end. This growth improves the 2016 figures, which reflected a growth of 10% over the previous year.

These data make us proud as Rioja ambassadors worldwide and motivate us to continue working to maintain this path of growth and international expansion without neglecting the quality that characterizes our products. Without a doubt, we owe all our thanks to our distributors and customers all over the world, since these good results would not be possible without them.

María Vargas: Best Winemaker of 2017

María Vargas, considered for years as one of the best winemakers in the world, has been named Best Enologist of the Year 2017. Marqués de Murrieta, the first winery in Rioja and considered the Best Winery in the World, continues to be successful: in its highly anticipated Rioja 2017 Special Report, the prestigious critic Tim Atkin not only chose Vargas -enologist of Marqués de Murrieta for 20 years- as Best Winemaker of 2017, but also gives the winery another recognition: the Best White Wine of the Year, for Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva Especial 1986. Their Reserva Rioja continues as a top shelf-yet affordable-flagship that is the ultimate in consistency, especially considering the price point.
